India's energy security is being strengthened with 132 CBG plants installed across the country under SATAT
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that 132 compressed biogas plants are operational in India, producing 920 tons daily. The SATAT initiative promotes clean fuels, rural incomes, and energy security.
India has installed 132 compressed biogas (CBG) plants with a total production capacity of 920 tonnes per day, and further capacity is being added under the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri shared this information on the social media platform X.
In a social media post, the minister stated that the CBG program is helping convert agricultural waste and organic waste into clean fuel, supporting rural incomes and reducing pollution.
He added that what was once waste is now powering development. Today, India has 132 compressed biogas plants producing 920 TPD, with further capacity being created under SATAT.
Amazing SATAT!
SATAT was launched on October 1, 2018, with the aim of creating an environment for CBG production from waste and biomass sources across the country. According to news agency ANI, under this initiative, oil and gas marketing companies like IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, GAIL, and IGL have invited expressions of interest from entrepreneurs for the purchase and sale of CBG.
Separately, the minister highlighted recent steps taken to increase domestic energy production in India. Puri said that by December 2025, India has launched 50 new exploration and production assets related to oil, gas, and coal bed methane, which he described as a significant step towards strengthening the country's energy security.

What will be special
The Union Minister said in his post that we are offering a total of 50 new E&P blocks including 25 blocks under Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP-X), 55 fields in 9 contract areas/blocks under Discovered Small Fields (DSF-IV), 3 blocks (2025) and 13 blocks (2026) under Special CBM Bidding Round 2025 and 2026.
The 25 blocks covering an area of approximately 1.83 lakh sq km are being offered under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy, which includes onshore, shallow water, deep water and ultra deep water blocks.
Hardeep Singh Puri stated that these blocks offer flexibility in exploration, royalty rate relief, and work schedules during the contract period.
The Discovered Small Field Bid Round IV, which includes 55 discoveries across nine contract areas, offers incentives such as zero royalty for the first seven years for deepwater fields and relaxed eligibility conditions.
According to ANI, similar incentives have been implemented in the Coal-Bed Methane Round, including pricing exemptions and cost reimbursement for mandatory drilling in the 2026 round.
Puri also stated that the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Act, 2025, and the PNG Rules, 2025, have introduced a uniform regulatory framework to facilitate business in the sector.
