ChatGPT usage report 2025: Who is using ChatGPT and how is its usage increasing. This report is based on the chat logs of 15 lakh users between May 2024 and June 2025.

ChatGPT usage report 2025: Artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT is becoming increasingly popular around the world. Recently, OpenAI has released a 62-page research report which explains who is using ChatGPT and how its usage is increasing.
OpenAI has released this report in content partnership with The Washington Post. This report is based on the chat logs of 1.5 million users between May 2024 and June 2025. The report has not yet been peer-reviewed but it helps a lot in understanding the trends of ChatGPT.
Who is using ChatGPT?
The tech industry is generally considered male-dominated, but ChatGPT has broken this notion. In the initial period i.e. 2022-2023, about 80% of the users' names were usually associated with men.
But by June 2025, this trend changed and now 52% of the users are women. This change shows that AI is no longer limited to technology professionals, but its scope has become global and diverse.
For what purpose is it being used?
Initially, ChatGPT was used equally for both personal and professional purposes. But by June 2025, 73% of the usage was found to be related to non-work i.e. personal life.
This means that people are now using ChatGPT more for tasks like study, health, fitness, how-to guidance and social media content.
The biggest category found in the research was "practical guidance" which was a part of 28.3% of the chats. This included advice related to students' studies, workout tips and daily life. After this, the highest usage was seen for writing help.
What do users ask?
According to the report, users mostly ask for help from ChatGPT in text editing and critique. After this, ChatGPT is also being used in writing emails, preparing social media posts and personal communication. ChatGPT has also been adopted in the tech industry, especially for coding. However, it was only a part of 4.2% of the chats.
Which use cases are growing?
The third biggest use case in the research was “searching for information” i.e. using ChatGPT as an alternative to Google search.
Between May 2024 and June 2024, this category saw steady growth and became the second most popular use case by June.
People are now asking ChatGPT for information such as news, facts and recipes. This trend indicates that in the coming times, ChatGPT and AI tools can change the business of online search and advertising.
An interesting trend was also seen in this category that people have also started taking product recommendations from ChatGPT. In about 2.1% of the chats, users asked questions related to shopping. This can become a new business model for OpenAI in the future where it can earn revenue from e-commerce partners.
Personal advice and "AI girlfriend"
The report also revealed that about 1.9% of the chats were related to relationships and personal feelings. At the same time, 0.4% of the chats were related to categories like "AI girlfriend" or games and role-play.
Although OpenAI says that this part is very small, but this is raising concerns about emotional attachment with AI chatbots. For this reason, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently started investigating chatbots.
How was the data collected?
OpenAI said that for this report, the chats were analyzed using their AI technology so that no one's privacy is violated. At the same time, demographic data was obtained from users during sign-up.
