Good news for Delhiites: Kashmere Gate traffic jam to end; government to build flyover at a cost of Rs 500 crore
To alleviate the ever-increasing traffic jams around Delhi's Kashmere Gate bus stand, the Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed the construction of a flyover or underpass. According to officials, the area is constantly jammed due to heavy bus traffic and the increasing number of pedestrians.

To address this problem, the department plans to construct a flyover approximately 100 meters from the bus terminal's exit point. This flyover will either pass over the existing Yudhishthir Setu flyover or replace it with an underpass, ending near the Metcalfe House traffic light.
Construction will be done at a cost of Rs 500 crore – Delhi Government
The Delhi government will spend approximately ₹500 crore on the entire project. The project aims to create a signal-free corridor from Nigambodh Ghat to Majnu Ka Tila, reducing the daily traffic jams at the Kashmere Gate ISBT.
The flyover will pass over the existing ISBT road and connect to Majnu Ka Tila after the Metcalfe Road signal. Once construction begins, the project is expected to be completed within two years.
Outline of three kilometer long flyover – PWD official
According to the Public Works Department's plan, this flyover will be two and a half to three kilometers long, starting from the Ring Road and Bypass junction and ending near Metcalfe House.
It will be designed so that vehicles heading towards ITO, Old Delhi, and the Yamuna River don't have to stop at the ISBT intersection. A tender will soon be issued to a consulting firm to study the flyover.
The plan will be made keeping in mind the existing traffic system and pedestrian traffic – Official
PWD officials stated that the area near the ISBT is extremely congested and experiences traffic jams even during off-peak hours. The area has been declared an "accident-prone zone" by the traffic police. Therefore, the new project will also include footbridges and ramps for pedestrians to ensure their safety.
There will be smooth traffic from Metcalf House to the Trauma Center area
This new scheme is also planned to be linked to the Delhi government's 680-meter-long flyover project, which is proposed from the Civil Lines Trauma Center to the DRDO office.
The connection between the two routes will also provide relief to vehicles traveling from the Metcalfe House area towards Rajghat and ITO.
Officials say that once the flyover is completed, traffic division is expected to reduce congestion by up to 60 percent.
