News, Digital Desk- ( Delhi) Construction of the much-awaited Bailey Bridge near the Rajputana Rifles Headquarters on Delhi's Ring Road will begin this weekend.
This bridge will end years of waiting. The Delhi Traffic Police has prepared a detailed plan for nighttime road closures and traffic diversions to minimize inconvenience during construction.
This new bridge will not only facilitate the movement of troops but will also open up an important new lane for traffic on one of Delhi's busiest roads.
The bridge will be ready overnight
The Delhi Traffic Police stated that the final phase of construction of the Bailey Bridge has begun. The bridge's supporting pillars have already been erected, and now the pre-fabricated steel sections will be assembled.
The work will be completed over four nights, with a portion of the Ring Road closed for approximately eight hours each night. This will ensure that daytime traffic is not significantly impacted.
When and where will the traffic diversion take place?
There will be some restrictions on traffic on the Ring Road between Dhaula Kuan and Narayana from October 11 to 14.
October 11 and 13: The road from Dhaula Kuan to Narayana will remain closed from 10 pm to 6 am.
October 12 and 14: The road from Narayana to Dhaula Kuan will be closed.
During this time, vehicles will be diverted to alternative routes. Vehicles going from Dhaula Kuan to Naraina will be able to go via Vande Mataram Marg (towards Naraina or Punjabi Bagh) or Station Road (towards Janakpuri or Jail Road).
At the same time, the U-turns near Barar Square and Naraina will be closed for vehicles going from Naraina to Dhaula Kuan. However, the U-turn at Barar Square may remain open for some time, depending on the situation. As an alternative route, vehicles will be able to turn left from Kripa Marg and go towards Dhaula Kuan.
Full preparation to handle traffic
Traffic police have decided to deploy additional personnel on diversion routes to ensure smooth traffic flow. Officials say that light traffic at night won't cause significant disruption, but commuters are still advised to use alternative routes.
The difficulties of the soldiers will be eased-
This Bailey bridge is being built between pillars 60 and 62 on the Ring Road, directly opposite the Rajputana Rifles Headquarters. Construction of the bridge will take approximately 32 hours, spread over four nights. Each side will take 8-9 hours to complete.
This bridge will prove to be a boon for thousands of soldiers who currently face great difficulty in crossing this busy road. A report in May 2025 stated that soldiers of the Rajputana Rifles had to cross a stinking and overflowing drain during the rainy season.
During the rainy season, this drain would fill up completely, forcing the soldiers to either wade through knee-deep water or take a 2.5-kilometer detour.
The court had taken cognizance of
The Delhi High Court took suo motu cognizance of the matter after a report and directed departments to find an immediate solution.
The Public Works Department (PWD) stated that a permanent foot overbridge would take a year. In response, the court suggested building a Bailey bridge as a temporary and quick solution.
This Bailey bridge will bring relief not only to the soldiers but also to the people living in the surrounding areas. It's a temporary but necessary measure that will promote safe traffic on Delhi's busy streets.
