Cyclone begins to affect, heavy rain expected till October 23
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The department predicts that the system will intensify from October 21st and will continue to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds until October 23rd.

The Meteorological Department has advised people and fishermen to remain vigilant for the next four days. According to IMD officials, this cyclonic system is currently forming a low pressure area over the ocean surface, which could further intensify into a deep depression or depression.
Heavy rain alert in Andaman and Nicobar
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is expected in many areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from October 21st to 23rd. Some areas may receive 7 to 11 centimeters of rainfall. Sea conditions will remain rough due to lightning and strong winds.
The department has issued a warning, stating that winds will blow at speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, gusting up to 55 kilometers per hour. This will cause high waves in coastal areas.
Warning for fishermen
The Meteorological Department has clearly stated that fishermen should not venture into the Andaman Sea and surrounding waters until October 24th. Sea conditions are being described as "rough to very rough."
This alert has been issued primarily for the Andaman and Nicobar coasts, where the risk of boats and canoes capsizing in the sea will increase.
Heavy rain continues in Tamil Nadu as well
A low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal is bringing continuous rainfall to Tamil Nadu. According to the IMD, this system will become more active around October 21st.
Heavy rain is expected in about 18 districts, including Erode, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Thanjavur. Some areas could receive between 64.5 and 111.5 mm of rainfall.
The department said the system will continue to have an impact for the next 48 hours and may cause local waterlogging and power disruptions over south coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Rain and landslide threat in Kerala
Strong winds and heavy rain have been lashing Kerala since Monday. An orange alert has been issued for Idukki, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts.
Heavy rains have caused waterlogging and disrupted traffic in many areas. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has appealed to families living in landslide or flood-prone areas to move to safer locations in a timely manner.
The state administration has put rescue teams on alert and relief centres are being opened in low-lying areas.
What does IMD say?
A senior IMD official said the weather system in the Bay of Bengal will strengthen over the next two days.
If the current cloud cover continues to build, it could intensify into a depression, change direction, and move westward, potentially impacting coastal Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh.
According to the department, the situation is currently under control, but the wind speed and rainfall pattern are being carefully monitored.
