Railways boost economy, freight traffic crosses 1 billion tonnes

The Railway Ministry said on Saturday that total freight traffic during this period exceeded 1.02 billion tonnes. The statement said this achievement reflects widespread support from key sectors. Coal was the largest contributor, amounting to 505 million tonnes.

 

Railways have always played a key role in accelerating the country's economy. Especially on the logistics front, their contribution has been crucial.

Significantly, in the current financial year, the railways have broken all records in freight traffic. As of November 19th, the railway's freight traffic has surpassed 1 billion tons. Let us also tell you what kind of figures have been released by the Railway Ministry.

The freight performance of railways continues to strengthen India's economic backbone. Total freight traffic has crossed the one billion tonne mark as of November 19 in the current financial year 2025-26. 

The Ministry of Railways said on Saturday that the total freight traffic during this period was more than 1.02 crore tonnes. The statement said that this achievement reflects the widespread support from key sectors. Coal was the largest contributor, amounting to 505 million tonnes.

Iron is next in line after coal

This was followed by iron ore 115 million tonnes, cement 92 million tonnes, container trade 59 million tonnes, pig iron and finished steel 47 million tonnes, fertilisers 42 million tonnes, mineral oil 32 million tonnes, food grains 30 million tonnes, raw material for steel plants about 20 million tonnes and other goods 74 million tonnes. 

The statement said that daily freight traffic remained strong at about 44 lakh tonnes, higher than last year's 42 lakh tonnes, reflecting better operational efficiency and consistent demand.
