India air pollution impact: Air pollution has become a serious threat in India. The situation is such that people are falling prey to many diseases due to it. However, experts say that pollution can be reduced.
Dr. Rakesh K. Chawla says that if we reduce fine particulate pollution by half and adopt guideline-based treatment for COPD, asthma and TB, then we can save millions of people from hospitalization every year and add healthy years to the lives of our people. It is not just a matter of hospitals or patients, but it is a question of saving the strength and vitality of an entire generation.
Dr Chawla says that cases of lung cancer are increasing in women due to kitchen smoke, biomass fuel, passive smoking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global TB Report 2024, about 199 new TB cases were registered per 1 lakh population in India in 2022.
Apart from this, emphasis was also laid on the increasing cases of pneumonia. It was told that worldwide, the death rate of children under the age of five is due to pneumonia, the rate of which is 14%.
Average life expectancy is 1000 days less
The reasons behind these increasing cases are- running in bad air, getting stuck in traffic jams daily, sitting in polluted classrooms- all these factors are damaging the lungs of the youth.
It was told in the conference that poisonous air is reducing the average lifespan of Indians by about 1,000 days which is an alarming figure. Let us tell you that according to the "State of Global Air 2020" report, pollution in India is reducing the lifespan of people by an average of 1.5 to 2 years.
Pollution is bad for the health of the youth
Experts have warned that the lung health of the youth is deteriorating rapidly. Talking about the statistics, about 81,700 new cases of lung cancer are being reported every year.
This figure is a measure of the increasing danger. Earlier lung diseases were seen in the elderly, but now cases like lung cancer, COPD and TB are being seen rapidly in the youth as well.
