Good news for farmers, MSP of these 6 crops increased by up to Rs 600

The central government on Tuesday increased the minimum support price (MSP) for the 2026-27 Rabi season . The decision increases the MSP for six major crops, including wheat, barley, chickpea, lentils, mustard, and safflower (safflower). This decision was taken to provide better prices to farmers and encourage the sowing of Rabi crops.

The MSP hike was announced by the Union Agriculture Ministry and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by the Prime Minister.

The following are the new MSP rates and hikes:

  1. crop    Old MSP (₹/quintal)    New MSP (₹/quintal)    Increase (₹)
  2. Wheat    2,425    2,585    160
  3. Barley    1,980    2,150    170
  4. Gram    5,650    5,875    225
  5. Lentil    6,700    7,000    300
  6. Mustard/Rapeseed    5,950    6,200    250
  7. Safflower    5,940    6,540    600

The list shows that safflower (safflower) has seen the biggest increase—₹600 per quintal. Crops like wheat and barley have also seen strong increases.

Potential impact and challenges of this announcement

  1. The new MSP rates will provide farmers with the possibility of higher returns , which will encourage sowing of Rabi crops.
  2. The impact of higher prices on inflation is expected to be limited, especially if there is adequate stock and supply in the market.
  3. Some analysts suggest that even the increased MSP does not fully cover the cost of cultivation, especially in areas where costs are very high.
  4. The growth percentage in crops like gram and lentil is lower than other crops, which may affect the inclination of farmers towards cultivation of these crops.
  5. . The government said the plan will provide farmers with better seeds, post-harvest infrastructure, and procurement assurance.

Reactions and political views

The Punjab BJP has welcomed this decision, calling it in the best interests of farmers. Meanwhile, some MPs have demanded that the government issue a white paper on MSP and the procurement process to ensure transparency in procurement and payments.
