News, Digital Desk- (Uttar Pradesh) Infrastructure projects such as airports and expressways have gained momentum in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Even before flights resume at Gautam Buddha Nagar's Jewar International Airport, the UP government has cleared the way for the construction of a new airport in another industrial district near the National Capital Region (NCR).
The government will begin construction soon, as most of the land has been acquired and negotiations are underway with farmers for the remaining. This development will further enhance connectivity in the state.
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that a new airport will be built in Meerut district. The Meerut Development Authority had previously announced the construction of the airport.
The Uttar Pradesh government has stated that land has been secured for the construction of a runway capable of handling 72-seater aircraft and for the development of the airport in Meerut. The land for the runway has been registered with the Civil Aviation Administration, and work on the airport development will begin soon.
How much land will the airport be built on?
According to the Meerut Development Authority, approximately 46 acres of land has been registered for civil aviation. The authority has also paid the outstanding land.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has asked the Meerut Development Authority to develop additional facilities beyond the runway and to secure 96 acres of land for the construction of the airport building.
What are the obstacles to building the airport?
The AAI has stated that 96 acres of land is needed for facilities other than the runway. The Meerut administration stated that they already possess 75 acres.
Negotiations are ongoing with farmers for the remaining 21 acres, and the matter is pending in court. The AAI has also asked the Meerut administration to immediately remove other obstacles, including power lines and poles.
The second and third phases of the airport are also being discussed.
The AAI has informed the Meerut administration that permission has been granted for the first phase, but 300 acres of land will still have to be arranged for the second phase and 200 acres for the third phase.
At present, work pending for the past 20 years has been completed. The airstrip land acquired from farmers has now been registered with the Civil Aviation Department. This land was previously unable to be registered because the authority had not received the full amount from the government.
